Welcome to Peggy Heitmann’s Studio
Welcome to My Studio
I love spending time in either of the two studios my husband designed and built for me. Here is where I allow creative to fly. I am free to work on either visual arts or word art. Often, I spend time here alone, but I also enjoy sharing my space with friends. In my studio, we discover ways to permit our imaginations to emerge and take shapes in unexpected ways.
My feelings are expressed in this modern-day sonnet that I wrote. So, welcome. I invite you near or far to close your eyes and imagine a day of play in my studio. Here is the poem previously published by County Lines a Literary Journal, volume 11-2024.
A Play-Full Sonnet
In the playhouse my Granddaddy built me,
I served imaginary playmates
pretend shortbread cookies and jasmine tea.
These friends never complained; they slurped and ate,
then they folded their hands and waited
for me to patiently say, Wash your hands.
We acted out stories I created.
Eventually the script changed into adult demands.
I dwell on the loss of those golden days,
or maybe I over imagine their strength
with each embellished happy rerun.
Alas, work replaced childhood days in a blink.
Now that I’m retired, I’m reclaiming play.
Friends, here’s my art studio. Come. Play. Stay.
In the information below, you will find out something about the person whose studio you just pretended to visit.
I lived in Columbus, Georgia until I was twenty-five. I still call Columbus home though I have now lived in Raleigh, North Carolina for more years than I lived in my home state.
Long before I left Georgia, for as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to small moments easily missed—the way light slips across a quiet room, the stories tucked inside a stranger’s eyes, the colors hidden in an ordinary day. I gather those moments in my journal. I write them down, sketch them out and shape them into something relatable before I offer them back to the world in the hope they might spark a smile, a pause, a sense of wonder, a glimpse of wisdom.
I am a poet, writer and artist with an unshakable belief that our world is brighter when we take time to notice something pleasurable each day.
When I create visual art in various mediums or write poetry or craft stories, I think about possibilities. The possibilities of making people feel a little more seen with my word-craft, a little more at home in the world through my art, and a little more inspired by both.
Creativity is my favorite kind of conversation. Please use the contact me form if you’d like to enter a discussion about anything, but especially about creativity, art–collage, altered books, watercolor, writing—poetry, creative nonfiction.
Thank you for visiting my corner of the internet and joining me in this conversation. I am so glad you are here. I hope you find something that makes your day a touch more radiant.
